Designed for “The Lodge On The Lake” design ideas competition, the Attunga Point proposal centres on the concept of ‘still life’ in focus. The residence for the Australian head of state is an expression of openness and acceptance while respectful of the individual. The Lodge expands into the landscape, branching out into openings between the trees where space is available for growth. Landscaped interstitial spaces provide a sense of enclosure while open to the sky, celebrating the openness of Australian life and disposition.
The proposal acknowledges the Lodge’s existence as a physical home as well as a media entity. The formal entry is orientated tangentially to the concentric form of the broader context, of which Parliament House is the centre.
The Prime Minister's dual role of official figurehead and individual is accommodated via clarity between the private dwelling and official functions. The private residence is located amongst the official elements but accessed separately. It is a complete, compact form that will endure.
The formal entry, broad and welcoming signals a place that is accessible and connected.
The figurative structure supporting the deep overhanging roof is suggestive of bare silhouetted trunks filtering intense light. Future needs are to be accommodated via additions or subtractions to a flexible form that is connects the various functions along a connective spine.
The residence’s official character is expressed as an organic formation that responds to the natural setting and nurtures the private sphere that is complete and individual.
