In the rural area of Northern Italy there is a discontinuity between the traditional heritage buildings and the design of modern dwellings. This project was presented as an alternative to the existing trend of houses, with the aim to rectify this complete disregard of the past. The two storeys house has all the components of the traditional buildings: a 'selese' or paved farm yard at the front of the building; a thick facade wall with small windows; and a “drying” screen which provides natural ventilation and filters the summer heat to the terrace on the top of the modern garage. The design intent, however, was not to copy or re-establish the old way of living, but rather to strengthen the connection between the new development and the existing rural buildings in the surrounding landscape.
